Years ago 60 minutes ran a story that was quite fascinating about stray voltage and the dairy industry. Most farms from a certain area had been provided electricity through above ground cables that were rather antiquated. Just the ordinary wear of the cables had caused them to become less receptive. In addition, most of these cables were now having to provide more electricity than they had originally been designed to supply. As a result the electricity that these cable could not receive was spread through the ground around the pole itself. Most of the poles were on fields and farms. Animals, especially cows, are highly sensitive to electrical current.
Many of these farmers rose up against the state utility company and sued them before they actually even considered replacing these antiquated cables. Some of these farms were lost and filed bankruptcy because of the length of time that it took the utility company to repair and replace the lines. Many of these companies know about the dangers of stray voltage, but avoid making repairs, because of the expense of upgrading the cables.
