A number of months ago a picked up a book entitled, “IT” by Craig Groeschel. It was an interesting read to say the least. There was one chapter in particular that I’d like to share with church leaders that read this blog. Mainly the focus is getting rid of things that are not benefiting the organization/church.
Craig states that he wasn’t suggesting that expanding or doing new things was wrong, but that you can’t overestimate the power of focus. Anthony Robbins once said, “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people go through life and never master anything in particular.”
Luke 10, Martha was overwhelmed with all of the responsibilities of hosting Jesus. Mary chose to sit at his feet. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is needed…..” To really possess what the church needs to possess you’ll have to choose not to do everything. Those who attempt to do everything usually lose something. Tiger Woods didn’t become the greatest golfer in the world focusing on playing basketball, baseball, and tennis.
An Italian Proverb says, “Often he who does too much does too little.” Too many ministries are doing too little by doing too much. For example, a lot of pastors boast about how many ministries they have in their church. This isn’t focused vision. You can’t do 40 different things in one church or business effectively.
Craig brings an example of a Burger franchise called In-N-Out Burger. He says, “Not only is their food delicious, but also the chain is very profitable”. They offer only a few items. “Ordering is easy as 1,2,3.” They offered me three choices.
1. The Double-Double with fries and a drink
2. The Cheeseburger with fries and a drink
3. The Hamburger with fries and a drink
In-N-Out Burgers are about burgers, fries and drinks. Notice their not selling waffles, lattes, or taco salads with guacamole. They’re not offering 100 different kinds of burgers. They’re offering just three.
Instead of thinking about what we want to add to the ministry to-do list, maybe we should pray about what to add to our ministry to-don’t list. We need to plan on the things we won’t do, so we can best do what God has called us to do. To be great at a few things we’ll have to say no to many things.
Most people say “and” when they need to say “or” most of the time.
